The use of incense experienced its heyday in Japan during the Heian era (794-1183). The imperial court competed to produce the most exquisite fragrance creations. Noble incense was used for lovers and to support all kinds of creativity. Artful incense ceremonies developed from numerous games, called Kumikoh, in which the aim was to recognise incense scents.
