Calamus root
Acorus calamus
Calamus is valued as a medicinal and ritual plant in various cultures in Asia, Europe and the Americas. It is also called stomach root and is a popular flavouring of herbal bitters. Its use as an incense plant is known in sweat lodge rituals of the Cheyenne or as a component of the legendary Egyptian incense blend Kyphi. Its bitter-spicy scent gives energy and strengthens self-confidence.
